Amazon hires 80,000 seasonal employees in anticipation of holiday sales

Amazon plans on hiring 80,000 temporary employees for this holiday season, which is a 14 percent increase over last year's seasonal hiring.

The company is anticipating increased sales this year and hopes to avoid the fulfillment problems that plagued UPS and other ground shippers last Christmas when an unforeseen spike in transactions slowed order processing.

Amazon now has over 50 order fulfillment warehouses in the U.S., and has recently added a number of "sortation" centers that function as a transition between the fulfillment centers and local post offices.

The seasonal employees that Amazon hires during the holidays may even be rewarded with full-time jobs. Last year, the company hired 10,000 temporary employees as full-time staff, and plans to do the same for thousands more after December comes to a close.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) reports that retailers, on average, tally 20 percent of their annual sales during the months of November and December. This means that companies are under extreme pressure to perform well throughout the holidays, and hiring extra employees is part of that overall effort.

The amount of additional workers that businesses hire in preparation for this time can be a sign of what sort of retail season is to come, and other companies are following in Amazon's footsteps. GameStop increased its seasonal hiring by 47 percent, adding 25,000 employees to the existing group, and UPS and FedEx are both adding 10,000 more workers to their holiday labor force.

The NRF is forecasting that $617 billion will be spent in holiday shopping this year, which signifies a 4.1 percent increase from last year.
