Hotel in Brunswick, ME suffers data breach

Officials with the Brunswick Hotel and Tavern annocned recently that a data breach may have compromised the information of about 2,600 former guests.

The Portland, ME based Olympia Hotel Management, which owns the hotel, said that malware was found on the hotel's computer systems, which may have allowed thieves access to customer payment information, according to the Portland Press Herald.

"It appears that one of the front desk computers at the hotel was infected with sophisticated malware designed to capture and permit remote access to payment card information while avoiding detection by anti-virus software," the company wrote in a letter sent to potentially affected customers. 

It is believed that the computer was affected for almost eight months, beginning on Nov. 29 through July 21. Though a detailed investigation is ongoing, Olympia believes that the malicious software was installed through an email phishing scam. 

"It was mistakenly opened up, and the malware is then designed to avoid detection from antivirus software," Olympia chief financial officer Dan Flaherty told the Bangor Daily News.

The breach was discovered when three guests reported fraudulent charges on their cards shortly after their stay. As of the announcement last week, they are the only customers who have contacted the company's incident line to report suspicious activity. In what has become the standard in these situations, all affected customers are being offered a year of free credit monitoring. 

"We're committed to protecting the information and we regret any inconvenience that it's causing," Flaherty said.
