Open market attracts merchants, consumers and cloud POS technology

Every Sunday in Boston, the SoWa district (South of Washington) of the city hosts a large community market. From May through October, this includes outdoor craft and farmers markets, an indoor vintage flea market and a large gathering of the best food trucks in the city. Last week, it also included the 2nd annual Ball and Buck: American Field pop-up shop, with over 30 retailers that offer USA-made fashion and goods..

Thousands of people came out to examine the products and buy some goods. However, because this event is held in several parking lots, one thing that is rarely seen is a traditional cash register.

Instead, there is widespread adoption of mobile and cloud-based point of sale systems. You can use a credit card to pay for a sandwich from Roxy's Grilled Cheese, a hat from the Goorin Bros table and a hair cut in the back of a truck from Ball and Buck, all with the latest technology. Consumers do not need to worry about missing out on the opportunity to purchase an item they fall in love with because they do not accept plastic and merchants don't miss any potential revenue.

Every merchant already has a smartphone or tablet for personal use and by adding a third-party peripheral, that device becomes the cash register. However, for this system to be successful, organizations need to be aware of the changes the industry has taken and be ready to implement POS software and a cloud-based solution.
